A blessed beginning of the Nativity Fast

Dear Parishioners and Friends,

Today our Holy Orthodox Church calls upon us to begin the Nativity Fast. 

Our Mother Church is asking us to intensify our prayers, church attendance and participation, give alms and abstain from non-lenten food (i.e. meats and dairy).

We fast out of obedience to our Mother Church. We fast to exercise our self control in all things (I Cor. 9:25), to realize the value and holiness of food, to elevate our spirit and mind over the body, to save money on expensive food as we eat а lessеr amount of food, and in turn we feed the hungry with that saved amount; to participate in the truth with love, thus enter into deeper communion with God; to see the true reality of life and to see ourselves as we truly are – in need of God’s grace and mercy; to realize that we cannot grow spiritually without God’s grace since our own autonomous acts do not lead us towards God.

I pray that each one of you has a blessed Nativity Fast and that you all grow spiritually by praying, fasting, almsgiving and participating in the sacraments of our Holy Church, especially Holy Confession and Holy Communion.

May God bless your fasting this season and may we all ready ourselves to worthily welcome our Savior Jesus Christ on the Nativity Feast Day on January 7th.

Драги ми Парохијани и Пријатељи,

Наша Мајка Црква нас позива на данас уђемо у свети пост, тј. кратки период од 40 дана да постом, молитвом и чињењем добрих дела, благодаћу Божјом уздигнемо душе своје изнад тела, да сазнамо реалност нашег живота у Господу и да сагледамо своје грехове, те кајући се чистимо душе и срца, и тако достојно припремамо да дочекамо Христа Богомладенца 7. јануара – када ћемо славити Његово рођење.

Постимо из љубави да покажемо своју послушност Цркви, да спознамо светост и вредност хране коју овде у Америци у изобиљу имамо, а где људи ипак гладни остају, као и у другим деловима света. Постимо да би јели мање, а и посну, тј. једноставнију храну те да би уштедивши, дали тај део новца за оне сиромашне и гладне који потребују.

Призивам благослов Божји на све Вас, желећи Вам благословен почетак Божићњег поста, са молитвама да достојно и сви заједно дочекамо славно Рођење нашег Спаситеља и Богомладенца Христа.
